Overview
This advanced level 3 course builds on the skills gained in the chair-based exercise qualification, expanding your expertise with a wider range of movements and progression techniques. You will have a greater repertoire of exercises enabling you to run sessions in combat, gym, aerobics and supple strength.
You will learn new seated exercises split into four themes, including supported standing and free standing neuromotor exercises that enhance balance, strength and functional ability. The course explores how to adapt and progress movements to create different training effects, challenge the neuromotor system and keep participants improving over time. By broadening your exercise repertoire, you’ll be able to refresh your sessions, offer greater variety.
This Seated Fitness, Function and Balance course can be completed online in approximately 16-20 hours.
On successful completion it leads to an AllActive Level 3 Certificate in Seated Fitness, Function and Balance Instructing.

Theme 1: Chair Gym – These can be performed seated or standing with the support of a chair. Covers a range of modes of resistance using different equipment such as bands, weights, self-resistance. The exercises are split into sections covered different parts of the body – wrist & forearm, biceps & triceps, shoulder and upper body, chest & back focus, trunk & core exercises, hip & thigh focus, inner & outer focus and lower leg focus.
Theme 2: Chair Aerobics – These can be performed seated or standing with the support of a chair. The exercises include upper, lower and whole-body exercises. Also includes aerobic power and high-cadence exercises and core-centric aerobic exercises.
Theme 3: Seated Combat – These are combat exercises to be performed seated. Starts by looking at the stances and guard position, punching techniques and footwork/basic movements. Exercises include leg techniques, defensive manoeuvres, conditioning, focus mitt drills, core & spinal strengthening, twists & lateral stretches and restorative and cool-down poses.
Theme 4: Supple Strength – Yoga-inspired exercises to be performed seated. Includes foundational and warm-up poses, core and spinal strengthening, lower body – hips, legs and balance, twist and lateral stretches, upper body and arm integration and ending with restorative and cool-down poses.

Format
Complete the Seated Fitness, Function and Balance Instructor course online via AllActive’s Learnstream platform. The course includes videos, downloads and podcasts covering theory, session structure, seated and standing exercise technique and programme design. You’ll have 12 months’ access, with the option to purchase a comprehensive printed course book to support your learning.
Assessment
- An online quiz (28/40 marks, 70% pass mark) with unlimited attempts.
- You’ll retain access to the course for 12 months, allowing you to revisit the material after passing and downloading your certificate.

What type of classes can I run at the end of this?
You will be able to run generic CBE classes with a much bigger repertoire. In addition, you will be able to run specific themed classes including:
- Chair aerobics
- Chair HIIT
- Chair FITT (for those participants who are very fit and healthy)
- Chair gym formats
- Seated supple strength (yoga-inspired)
- Seated combat
Does this advanced course include standing exercises?
Yes, these groups of exercises include a standing version with the support of the chair:
- Mobility exercises and dynamic stretches
- Cool-down stretches
- Chair gym
- Chair aerobics
Who can take part in the class?
The Seated Fitness, Function and Balance course is suitable for those participants at low risk of falls. It is primarily a prevention programme to help protect participants before issues arise. People at higher risk should seek support through medical professionals.
Do I need additional equipment?
For the Chair gym resistance exercises it is recommended that you have resistance bands, towels, dumbbells (or water bottles) or weighted balls.
Who is this course suitable for?
Please note that you must already have a Chair-based Exercise Instructing certificate for this CPD course.
What settings can I run these classes in?
This course enables the instructor to run a seated parachute session or within a chair-based exercise sessions in a variety of settings, for example, within health, adult social care and leisure environments.
How do I get my certificate?
If you are taking the online course format, then the certificate can be automatically downloaded as soon as you have passed the quiz.
After this course, what can I study next?
Once you have completed this course you may consider another advanced Level 3 course.

This course contributes 10 CPD points.
What happens if I don’t pass the quiz?
If you should need to retake the quiz to pass the course, this will be available free-of-charge and automatically available.
Do I need to purchase the book with the course?
This is entirely optional as all the content required for the course is available via AllActive’s Learnstream platform. You may find it useful to accompany your studies and then afterwards for reference in the future.
Is this course available in different languages?
