Chair‑Based Exercise Instructor
This CIMSPA and Active IQ–endorsed Chair-Based Exercise (CBE) Instructor Certification equips you with the skills and knowledge to lead your own seated exercise classes. You’ll learn how to plan and deliver inclusive chair-based sessions for frailer older adults and disabled adults, aligned with the core principles and values of adult social care.
The course covers the physical, mental, and social benefits of chair-based exercise, effective participant engagement, and exercises designed to improve aerobic fitness, strength, mobility, and flexibility. You’ll also learn how to adapt activities to meet individual needs and enhance participants’ quality of life.
Overview
This Chair-based Exercise Instructor course can be completed online in approximately 6-10 hours. Alternatively, if you would prefer face-to-face training we can offer open course or in-house training options. Discounts are available on groups of 5+ bookings.
Although there are no formal qualification prerequisites it is recommended that you understand the structure and function of body systems before undertaking this CBE course.

Format & Assessment
Format
Complete the Chair-based Exercise Instructor course online via AllActive’s Learnstream platform. The course includes videos, downloads and podcasts covering session structure, seated exercise technique and programme design. You’ll have 12 months’ access, with the option to purchase a comprehensive printed course manual to support your learning.
Assessment
- An online quiz (18/25 marks, 70% pass mark) with unlimited attempts.
- You’ll retain access to the course for 12 months, allowing you to revisit the material after passing and downloading your certificate.
Format
Join us live for two three-hour Zoom workshops. Ahead of the sessions, you’ll receive a comprehensive study pack with your course manual, three latex-free resistance bands (extra light, light and medium), and supporting handouts. You’ll also complete guided pre-course preparation via the manual and online via AllActive's Learnstream platform (12 months’ access included), featuring reading and practical exercise video work (approximately 2–3 hours).
Assessment
- Certification requires completion of the pre-course tasks and attendance at both workshops.
- If a workshop is missed, you must watch the recording. Missing the second workshop also requires submission of a recorded 10-minute session (£20 + VAT review fee).
- Failure to attend both workshops will result in no certificate being issued.
